For almost as long as PaBIA has been in existence, it has been concerned with the health and welfare of the cottagers. No one wants to even think about getting sick or sustaining an injury while on vacation, right?  But what if the unthinkable happens? What then? With PaBERT not in operation this summer, PaBIA encourages each member to take a few minutes NOW to consider how that might affect you and/or your family in the case of an emergency while on the island. What would you do?

  1. Perhaps call the nursing station for information;
  2. Or in the case of a real emergency, dial 911 (please read the message from the ToA below).
  3. Or perhaps, call PaBIA’s Marine Patrol for transporting the EMT from the mainland to your island or transferring an injured cottager to a waiting ambulance in their new, better equipped boat for such emergencies.
  4. However, it is important to keep in mind that the Marine Patrol only operates between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day but Wednesday, and doesn’t operate the other 16 hours of the evening and night time.
  5. Who would transport your loved one in the dark?
  6. Is your boat able to carry an injured/sick person to the mainland?
  7. What plans might you put in place NOW that everyone knows about so that you know what to do in the case of an emergency?

What if the need for CPR arose?  Do you know how to administer life saving CPR?  It’s one thing to be in the city where an ambulance is just a call away. But it is quite another to be on an island 20 minutes from the mainland with no help on the way.  Either way, taking a few hours to learn how to do CPR could save the life of someone close to you.  So PaBIA wants to encourage you to take a CPR course this summer and has solicited St. John Ambulance to offer two CPR level “A” courses, as well as an AED course.

We have scheduled St John’s Ambulance to come to the Pointe au Baril Community Centre two mornings over the summer from 9:00 to noon on either July 14 or August 11.  The one-morning course is $75:00/person.  Please be aware, however, that each course is limited to a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 15 candidates, ages 15 years and up. Therefore, we need to ask those seriously interested to sign up IN ADVANCE by contacting Graham Smith, Director of Member Safety NOW.  Should there be enough interest, more courses may be offered.
