Archipelago Purchases Land in PaB for Attainable Housing

38-acre property off North Shore Road
from Parry Sound North Star

Entire Article Here

In line with its strategic priorities and goals, the Township of The Archipelago announced on January 3 that it had purchased 38 acres of land in the Village of Pointe au Baril Station. The land, located on North Shore Road, is also where the township extended the road to establish a telecommunications tower in 2021 to improve connectivity in the township and surrounding areas.

The purchase of these lands will assist the residents of the village with the provision of attainable and entry-level housing.

While the township reported it was excited by this opportunity, there are many steps that have to be taken prior to development. The township will initiate the required studies, including environmental and servicing studies, to ensure that the development of building lots on the site can occur and be serviced in an environmentally appropriate manner.

The township does not intend on building homes on these lands. The purpose of this project is twofold: firstly, to create lots for sale, which will lead to the construction of homes to serve the community; and, secondly, to zone the lands to ensure that the types and sizes of houses (i.e. maximum square footage) will address the community’s attainable housing needs.

On behalf of all council, Reeve Bert Liverance stated: “This is an exciting initiative for the township and the Village of Pointe au Baril. We have listened and responded to our community and this project confirms that the township is supportive of its residents and businesses.”

The State of the Great Lakes reports are developed by the governments of Canada and the United States, in collaboration with many partners, in accordance with the 2012 Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. State of the Great Lakes assessments support the identification of current and emerging challenges to Great Lakes water quality and ecosystem health, and help inform and engage others.

Based on the assessments of the nine State of the Great Lakes indicators, the overall status of the Lake Huron basin ecosystem is good and the trend is unchanging.
