PaBIA eBlast July 29, 2026

This coming week is a busy one. We have received a tremendous response from the community for Scott Weir’s PaB Passions presentation and as such is being moved it to the Movie Hut. Please note that registration has closed as we have reached the capacity of the Movie Hut. The Movie Hut will open at 3:30pm with cash/chit bar to give attendees time to purchase a drink, mingle and find a seat. After the 4:00pm start of the presentation, access to the Movie Hut will not be possible. Thank you for your understanding and support!

Saturday is, of course, the Senior Regatta – Meghan Allen and Kate Pitfield have ordered a perfect GB day for the 10 am start, the Sailing Races are on Sunday at 2 pm, and Monday is PaBIA’s Blueberry Pancake Breakfast and Annual Meeting at 9 am.

Given how busy the waterways are in the height of the season, please consider safety first as you boat, both during the day and at night.. Did you know that, in 2025, most incidents (68%) were actually during the day, between noon and 6 pm on Saturdays and Mondays, according to the GBA’s Boating, Safety and Emergencies statistics from Annual Report 2026?

How it Works: The “Digital Ping”

If you are lost or in distress but still have even a faint cell signal, rescuers can find you in seconds:

1. The Text: The JRCC sends a special link via SMS to your smartphone.
2. The Permission: You click the link and hit “Allow” when your browser asks to share your location.
3. The Fix: Your phone’s internal GPS sends your exact coordinates directly to the rescuer’s dashboard.
4. The Rescue: A “dot” appears on the Coast Guard’s map, allowing them to boat or fly directly to your position, often within a few meters of accuracy.

What You Need to Know

• No App Required: You do not need to download or buy anything. It works through your phone’s standard web browser.
• Requirements: You must have Location Services “ON” and enough signal to receive a text message.
• The Limitation: This is not a “silver bullet.” In deep wilderness or far offshore with zero cell coverage, Connect Rocket cannot reach you.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of an anonymous family foundation and their unshakable dedication to Georgian Bay’s freshwater ecosystem, we have launched three innovative scientific programs to study and develop responsive conservation plans for Georgian Bay’s water, wetlands, and shorelines.

Turning Data Into Action

Building a water-quality monitoring network across Georgian Bay for publicly accessible data and integral knowledge-sharing

Tracking Movements of Lake Sturgeon Across Georgian Bay

Monitoring for the presence of lake sturgeon in Georgian Bay to inform population-recovery planning for this endangered species

Phragmites Hybridization Research 

Investigating the possible environmental effects and management needs of hybrid Phragmites in Georgian Bay

Announcing Our Affiliated US-Based Research Projects

In strategic partnership with an anonymous foundation, Georgian Bay Forever was chosen in 2026 to help guide and facilitate the selection of five projects, led by outstanding US researchers, directly in line with our mission to protect and conserve Georgian Bay through scientific research for long-term impact. Due to disbursement requirements, this funding could only be given to organizations registered in both the US and Canada, so while GBF could not directly receive funding, we will continue supporting and documenting these projects in the years to come.

We are honoured to introduce these projects here. 

Juvenile Fish Ecology in Georgian Bay: Movement, Predation, and the Influence of Aquaculture Net-Pen Operations

This project will study how juvenile fish use habitats around aquaculture net-pens in Parry Sound and compare their movements to those in nearby natural nursery areas

Methylmercury Formation in Georgian Bay and the Influence of Invasive Quagga Mussels

This study seeks to characterize where in Georgian Bay this toxic methylmercury (MeHg) is produced, and aims to investigate how the invasive Dreissenid mussel, which has fundamentally rewired the Bay’s ecology, impacts the microbial production of MeHg.

Mapping the Microplastics Threat in Georgian Bay:
Next-Generation Methods for Plastics Distributions and Ecotoxicology

This project will assess microplastics pollution across Georgian Bay’s waters and sediments using state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques and statistical frameworks to better assess transport, fate, and ecological risks of microplastics.

Building Coastal Resilience in Georgian Bay:
Integrated Modeling and AI Tools for Extreme Water Levels, Flooding, and Coastal Erosion

This project will develop an integrated coastal resilience assessment system for Georgian Bay that combines advanced hydrodynamic modeling, wave and sediment transport simulations, and artificial intelligence (AI)– based hazard prediction tools.

Laying the Groundwork for an Environmental Monitoring Network for Manoomin Restoration in Georgian Bay

This project will deploy advanced environmental sensors to characterize the physical, chemical, and biological conditions at existing and potential Manoomin restoration sites, providing the evidence base needed to guide restoration site selection, inform adaptive management decisions, and evaluate restoration success.
