Marine Patrol Training Week

The formal 2016 Marine Patrol training week started this week with great energy. In the picture left to right are Brooks Greer, GBLT; Scott Sheard, MP Supervisor; Emma Berton and Nate Stapulionis.

First Day our patrollers, Nate Stapulionis and Emma Berton shared the task to:

  • Establish a fully functional PaBIA Office, and
  • Meet with Nancy Rogers, PaBIA Secretary/Treasurer, who established the payroll and HR requirements of the program.
  • Resident expert and instructor, Randy Johnson, administered the VHF Radio Licencing Exam.

Our patrollers are now proficient in this certification as of this past Sunday

Day Two

  • MP protocol review
  • Brooks Greer, Land Protection Manager of the Georgian Bay Land Trust. Learning the protocol of other organizations is critical to PaBIA delivering value to our partnerships and especially so with GBLT. Brooks outlined the land conservancy protocols associated to its extensive holdings in the Pointe au Baril area. There are two new additions to GBLT’s holdings in our area and more on the way.
  • The patrollers will monitor the land use of these properties for GBLT and invite all property stewards to contact us.

Day Three

  • Fire pump operation and maintenance protocols from Randy Johnson and
  • Refresher on boat handling skills. Our largest boat in the MP fleet is very responsive to helm changes in shallow and deep water operation.
  • The Coast Guard Inshore Rescue team for training in towing techniques, safely lifting people into larger boats, and dealing with emergency situations. Please waive to our local Coast Guard boat from Britt.

We’ll update you on our training progress again and our crew wishes you a Happy Canada Day.  See you on the water!

Doug Barrett Joining
PaBIA Board

Doug Barrett joins the Board with responsibility for the legal affairs side of things.  For a long time he was a Bay Street media and entertainment lawyer and then the CEO of a mid-sized, Canada wide, film equipment rental company.  Now he’s a Media Management Prof in the MBA program at the Schulich School of Business.
His family began coming here in the late 70’s when he and his siblings first bought the old McIntosh cottage near the Lighthouse.  He’s a long-time admirer of the wonderful work that PaBIA does – and somebody finally asked him to help out.
