Volume 14 No. 15

After a beautiful weekend, the rain has been steady through most of Monday afternoon and evening – only to give way to a beautiful, sun-filled Tuesday.

Looking ahead, there is so much still going on with Science North coming to PaB Station along with Arts on the Bay, PaBAR Sailing Race, our own PaBIA Naturalist. etc.

Plus, we are looking for strong and willing volunteers to help move derelict docks that have found their way onto our shorelines to the station for ToA disposal later in August! Many hands makes light work! So please contact the MP so we know you’ll be there to lend your time.

Still lots ahead these next few weeks. The Naturalist will be a fascinating look at how nature responds to fire and the Ojibway Art Show will be in full force from now through Sunday.

Recap of PaBIA’s AGM Speaker’s Remarks on Floating Cottages

Peter Frost, who spoke at PaBIA’s AGM, is a Ward 2 Councillor from the Township of the Archipelago and a member of the newly formed Sub-Committee of the GBA Floating Cottage team. He also is a member of the National Recreational Boating Advisory Committee of Transport Canada, making him well qualified to speak about this rising concern of Floating Cottages.

Peter explained that some municipalities are beginning to see Floating Cottages crop up in various locations up and down Georgian Bay, bringing with them environmental and other concerns. As is the case with many issues around the Bay, members of PaBIA and its Board, when learning of issues elsewhere, want you to be educated BEFORE the concerns land in our cottage bays when it is NOT in the best interest of keeping our natural surroundings pristine. The Georgian Bay Association is definitely our eyes and ears up and down the Bay.

To learn more about this issue, please click here and read a synopsis of Peter’s remarks made to PaBIA members at the AGM.

Arts on the Bay – August 13th

Carlos del Junco and The Blues Mongrels

Pointe au Baril Community Centre

Now air-conditioned!

Dinner available at 5 p.m., Show starts 6:30 p.m.

Carlos del Junco has come a long way since spending many summers as a kid – starting in the late 1960’s – in Pointe Au Baril on Jergen’s Point island. His parents sold the cottage around 1998. He’s since made a name for himself as one of the world’s best diatonic harmonica players (“diatonic” harmonica is the same 10 hole harmonica that Bob Dylan uses) with many accolades to show for it.

To say that del Junco just plays the harmonica would be like saying Jimi Hendrix was just a guitar player. He blows the blues harp through a prism — suddenly it seems he’s holding every colour in the musical rainbow right there in his hands.

Simultaneously sophisticated and raw, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz (hence the name for his band “The Blues Mongrels”). The emphasis is on blues, but Carlos and his band are not afraid to merrily traipse off in other directions delivering a seamless fusion of swing,  New Orleans second line grooves, Latin, ska melodies, to swampy roots rock. Ticket info here!

Key River Fire of 2018 –

Derelict Dock Clean Up Day – August 27, 2022

Need Volunteers to Help Get
Boats to Station

In an effort to clean up our shorelines, PaBIA is hosting an abandoned dock day. Old, derelict docks will be towed into the station, and the township will disassemble and dispose of them.

If you have any abandoned docks that you wish to be removed, you can call the Marine Patrol at (647) 545-9283 or email us . This effort is entirely volunteer based. If you are around this August 27, please consider volunteering your time to help tow docks to the station. The more volunteers present, the more docks we can dispose of. With the ongoing support for this initiative, we will be able to clean our shorelines of old dock debris. Sign Up by calling (647-545-9283) or emailing the Marine Patrol.

PaBIA Wajax Fire Pumps!

Do you know where the closest one is to you?

One of the Marine Patrol’s responsibilities is to test the four Wajax fire pumps located around Pointe au Baril biweekly. The map below highlights the locations of the fire pumps located on Barclay Island, the bottom end of Hemlock Channel, Fredericks Inlet, and Ojibway Island.

Instructions for running the Wajax fire pumps are downloadable here! They operate differently than most cottage-owned Hondas…and are more powerful. It’s worth printing out the instructions and familiarizing yourself with how they operate!

Perseids Meteor Shower – Start Watching the Night Sky!

by Trudy Irvine, Education Committee Chair

From The Weather Network app comes a good explanation of when and how to watch the Heavens not only August 12-13 but starting now!

“The peak of the Perseid meteor shower is coming up later this week, but due to the Moon, now may be the best time to go out and see it!

Every year, towards the middle of summer, a display of bright flashes lights up our night skies. From mid-July to late August, Earth passes through a trail of icy debris in space, left behind by a comet known as 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Discovered in 1862, Comet Swift-Tuttle passes by Earth every 133 years, and since its last pass in 1992, it is now far out in the solar system, beyond the orbit of Neptune. Still, each year we receive a reminder of its existence in the form of the Perseid meteor shower.”

Literally on the Bay

Book recommendations by Charlotte Stein, owner of Parry Sound Books

Edited by Janet Irving, Education Committee.

There is nothing – absolutely nothing – like reading a book on a summer’s day on Georgian Bay! This summer we suggest some books that are literally set on the Bay – or feel so much so that we just had to include them.

FOLDING FIELD GUIDES are a great way to identify all that is alive in the natural world around us. Easy to pack in a pocket, and waterproof for paddling. Woodpeckers of North America, Great Lakes Birds, Ontario Fishes, Sandhill Crane Display are only a few of dozens. These handy dandy naturalist guides are perfect for all ages!

The ‘Kids in the Biosphere’ Project – There Are Still Kits Available

The Kids in the Biosphere Project is a children’s project that includes different outdoor adventures for young people. One week there in the kit was: an owl “pellet”, tweezers, a prob, collector bag, instructions & diagrams that provided guidance for the project. The project was to dissect the pellet and re-create, from the contents, the skeletal remains of whatever the owl happened to have for dinner. The kids found it fascinating.

If you have kids or grandkids and have an interest, there are still kits available for these nature projects Please email GBB ASAP so Tonia at Desmasdons will know how many more additional kits are needed.

Celebration to Honour Emmaline for 50 Years as
Lighthouse Keeper August 20 – Share your Favourite memories with her!

In the Anishinaabe Culture, the Birch Bark Basket symbolizes a connection individually and collectively that binds an individual to their land, ancestors, and each other. The Birch Bark Basket is an expression of experience and how a story is shared during Anishinaabe Cultural Practices.

In the soulful place where earth, sky and water meet nature and embraces the soul, Emmaline Madigan celebrates her 50th year as the Pointe au Baril Lighthouse Keeper. We are asking the community to fill Emmaline’s Birch Bark Basket with their Lighthouse stories, memories, and pictures.

Community members are encouraged to complete this linked form to share their favourite Pointe au Baril Lighthouse memories. The collected stories and photos will be shared with Emmaline once compiled.

For those who would like to share written memories and physical pictures, a traditional Birch Bark Basket will be present at Emmaline’s celebration at the Pointe au Baril Community Centre on August 20th.
