This annual event is run entirely by volunteers who are needed throughout the day to set up, sing the anthem, tally points, help with race set up, judge diving, and distribute ribbons. Week Starting Wednesday, June 26th

Tune Up Sailing Race – Saturday June 29th

Join us for the Tune-up Race on Saturday June 29 at 2 pm on the Middle Reach course, followed by Entre Amis at the Ojibway Club. This year are changing the race start sequence based on the World Sailing racing rules (which are 5/4/1/Start). The first race will start at 2 pm. We will email a few hours before a race if it is cancelled or moved due to the weather.

< A big thank you to Rainer Kaufmann and Madeleine Arsenault for hosting the Pre-Season Rendezvous on Saturday June 22. A wonderful tradition in the making!

We have had several individuals express interest in skippering and/or crewing this year. Please contact me if you are looking for crew or a skipper for your boat or if you would like to be added to our Crew List.

Are Your Fire Pumps Hooked Up &

Primed Properly?

Desmasdons has done their ‘beginning of season’ maintenance on the 4 Wajax pumps that PaBIA operates and have placed them out in island around the Bay. Thank you!

Members are encouraged to become familiar with these locations so they can easily access the pumps in case of an emergency. The Marine Patrol have started doing their regular fire pump testing on these fire pumps.

Fire Pump Demos

For Kids & Adults – July 5th!

The Marine Patrol is hosting a Fire Pump Demonstration on July 5th at 3:00 pm. We will be doing the demonstration of a Wajax Fire pump on the docks in the back bay of the Ojibway Club. If you are interested in learning how to properly start and work these fire pumps, we welcome you to join!

You are also more than welcome to bring your own personal fire pumps for a brief demo on how to prime and work the pump. Randy Johnson, our expert Power Squadron leader, will be there to answer any questions you might have regarding fire pumps and hoses. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Fishing

Have a fishing story and photos you want to share?

One of the highlights of the fishing season is hearing your stories and seeing photos of the ones that didn’t get away.

Last year I received many great fish photos, several of which made the annual PaBIA/Ojibway yearbook, so I would really like to continue that tradition this year.

It also helps to collect anecdotal evidence about what’s happening with fish populations along our shores that I’m happy to pass along to the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve biologists. Last year, for example, I heard many stories and saw many photos of northern pike of all sizes, which, taken together, helped tell of a healthy rebound in pike numbers since the low water levels of several years ago.

So please send me your stories and photos! I’ll publish them in the PABIA e-blasts during the summer and use some of them in the 2020 yearbook.

Good luck out there, and remember, big fish matter because the bigger the fish, the better it is at reproducing. Practicing catch and release with the big ones helps the continued good health of fish species’ population.

Habitat for Humanity PaB Build –

Monday was a great success – our first volunteer “Build Day” of the summer! Thank you to those who made it possible!!. With the foundation complete and the groundwork laid (literally!), the site is ready to start bustling with volunteers and the fruit of their impactful contributions!

We know that everyone who volunteers on the site has a unique set of skills and interests….. which is why we get some of the tricky, grunt-work done ahead of time! Check out the window frames that were constructed last week! Whether you’re a handy (wo)man or an average Joe, we can undoubtedly use you and your two hands any day this summer, no building experience necessary!

Teamwork makes a dream work, as they say. Chat with your friends and family and sign up for a date together! July 3 is our first, official day of volunteering and we are quickly building up the schedule! First come- first served date booking so what are you waiting for? Schedule a build day with Rachael.

Ontario Birds – Pileated Woodpecker

A big, dashing bird with a flaming crest, the largest woodpecker in North America (except the Ivory-bill, which is almost certainly extinct). Excavating deep into rotten wood to get at the nests of carpenter ants, the Pileated leaves characteristic rectangular holes in dead trees. This species became rare in eastern North America with clearing of forests in centuries past, but has gradually increased in numbers again since about the beginning of the 20th century. Where unmolested, it even lives in parks and woodlots around the edges of large cities.

Feeding Behavior

Forages mainly by probing, prying, and excavating in dead wood in search of insects. May gouge deep holes in rotten wood to get at ant nests, sometimes tearing apart stumps and big sections of fallen logs. May clamber about acrobatically in small branches to get at berries.

Eggs

3-5. White. Incubation is by both sexes (male incubating at night and part of day), about 18 days. Young: Both parents feed nestlings, by regurgitation. Young leave nest 26-28 days after hatching, may remain with parents 2-3 months.

Diet

Mostly ants and other insects, also fruits, nuts. Carpenter ants may be up to 60% of diet; also eats other ants (rarely digging into anthills on ground), termites, larvae of wood-boring beetles, other insects. About one-quarter of the diet may be wild fruits, berries, and nuts.

Nesting

Territory is defended with loud drumming and ringing calls. Courtship displays include spreading wings (showing off white wing patch), raising crest, swinging head back and forth, gliding display flight. At prospective nest site, both sexes may tap or drum on wood. Nest site is a cavity in a dead tree or in dead branch of a live tree, sometimes in utility pole, usually 15-80′ above ground. Generally makes a new cavity each year, with both sexes helping to excavate.

Lost or Found

LOST DOCK: The top of a stationary dock has been lost from A150 – 23. This dock WITH the A150-23 green ToA sign on it is about 20 feet long with a side ramp. It does not have floatation. If found, please contact Bill Moore

LOST CANOE:

Because of the high water an old canoe that was on the shore edge, west and south of Poplar Island, has drifted away. It is a very light colour aluminium with no flotation in it because it was bought in the 40’s or early 50’s. It has 2 pointed ends and is about 14 to 16 feet in length. If anyone has seen it they may contact Rebecca Middleton to retrieve it, and she will return it to the owner.

It was his Gramma’s canoe, and he was saddened to think because of the high water this year that it has been carried away.
