Volume 16 No. 10

After the high temps last week of 35 C (95 F), this past weekend it brought torrential downpours producing more than 75 mm (3″) of rain within 36 hours. Monday brought PaB’s blue skies and seasonal temps – and yesterday we were back to the rain. I hope it helps the blueberries!

Despite the rain, it is expected that this summer will be dry and hot – so please be sure your fire pump(s) and hoses are ready to go NOW! And while you’re at it, take a picture and send it in to participate in the Firepump Contest and win one of the $100 drawings! Check out the information below!

For your convenience, please check out the links to our partners at the bottom of each eBlast!

With the summer season officially starting with the Ojibway Club’s official opening today and the calendars updated so you can join us for many of the events PaBIA has planned for the summer, we hope to see everyone very soon!

For the 2nd summer, starting on July 1 at 7pm, there will be weekly Monday evening meetings of the 1906 Group at The Ojibway Club.

The 1906 Group is an open meeting – all are welcome – loosely based on traditional meetings of Al-Anon and AA. Many of us in Pointe au Baril have loved ones who battle various addictions and substance disorders – and of course, others of us face these challenges ourselves or simply want to hear how others have overcome their cravings. The 1906 Group will alternate between speaker-led formats and readings about the disease of “more”, and there will always be opportunities for individuals to share openly and discreetly. Remember… what you hear here, who you see here, stays here…

We look forward to seeing you on Mondays at 7pm in July and August!

As of August 1, 2024, new rules from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) could make traveling across the border with a dog more cumbersome. The CDC has tightened its dog and cat importation regulations to prevent the reintroduction of rabies to the United States. These new rules apply to all dogs, including dogs that left the United States and are returning.

Seeking Input for Speed Restrictions for Pointe au Baril Channel

The Archipelago Council passed Resolution No. 23-176 directing staff to investigate the submission of a Vessel Operation Restriction Regulation (VORR) in the Pointe Au Baril channel, proposing to limit the speed of vessels to 10km/hr for a distance of 1.5km (see map). This proposal is based on many reports and concerns regarding the safety of users in the narrow channel, the protection of public and private infrastructure, and the environmental protection of the shorelines and species.

The Archipelago’s Strategic Plan contains strategic priorities including protecting and preserving our shorelines and environment and providing strong leadership through responsible decision making. The proposed regulation would contribute to the safety and social values many in our Township enjoy, including the safe, quiet, and peaceful enjoyment of Georgian Bay and the Inland Lakes.

Currently, the Archipelago is consulting with residents, businesses, First Nations, and agencies to receive feedback on the proposed speed regulation. After reviewing your collective feedback, a decision will be made regarding proceeding with the application, which requires submission in August 2024 to Transport Canada, Office of Boating Safety, for a formal review. The timeline for recognizing the speed limit as an official regulation may take up to two years, and may result in speed limit signage, buoys, and additional enforcement.

Please send all correspondence to Josh Badger, ToA Director of Operations and Facilities, by July 5, 2024, for consideration.

Are your kids and grandkids ready for exploration and adventure?

Georgian Bay Mnidoo Gamii Biosphere is continuing to offer Kids in the Biosphere in partnership with The Township of The Archipelago (TOA). This free program provides participating families with activities to keep them outside and learning about nature all summer long!

Families within the TOA register with the program at the beginning of summer and pick up an activity kit with materials and activity instructions. The self-guided activities are designed to last all summer. Beyond nature observation, the activity kits invite families to conduct science experiments and take actions to help local species at risk. Families can submit photos of their discoveries on the Biosphere website. Activities are mainly self-guided but there are opportunities for families to interact with Biosphere staff and guest experts.

We are back for the summer of 2024! If you are interested in an activity kit, please register and find out where to pick one up! Have questions? For more information about what the Biosphere offers youth, please click here!
