All Too Clear uses cutting-edge underwater drones to explore how quadrillions of tiny invasive mussels are re-engineering the ecosystem of North America’s Great Lakes at a scale not seen since the glaciers. The mussels are trapping nutrients, the building blocks of life, on the lake bottom.

In the exploration using an underwater camera, they found the Africa, a late 1800s ship that went down and had never been found until 2019!

Two Zone Approach to Tree Preservation By-law
How does Site Alteration By-law work in practice

The Township of the Archipelago will host two public open houses to gather public feedback on the revised Draft Tree Preservation and Draft Site Alteration By-Laws.

  • An In-person Open House on August 13th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Pointe au Baril Community Centre, and
  • An Online Open House on August 22nd from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. You can register here for the online open house, where you can also submit comments online and read the revised drafts.

The revisions include significant changes to the Draft Tree Preservation By-Law, which, if passed as currently written, would prohibit clear-cutting, as well as destroying native shoreline vegetation and trees within the shoreline buffer area, (the first 7.5 metres from the shoreline). This means that property owners would be free to cut trees on their property outside of the 7.5 metre shoreline buffer, as long as it is not clear-cutting. There are exceptions currently written to allow for many regular property maintenance activities within the shoreline buffer area, including removing damaged trees, or trees that obstruct a solar panel, for example.

The Draft Site Alteration By-Law remains largely unchanged, but both revised drafts make it possible for the Township’s Manager of Development and Environmental Services to grant exceptions and impose conditions to allow for quicker processing.

Thank you to Robert & Kathy Metcalfe for their many years of sponsorship for the Junior Regatta’s “Metcalfe Family” plaque for the Girls Single Canoe Race winner.

Sponsorship is now open for that event’s award. Please contact Elise Findlay for details if you’re interested in being the new sponsor!

PAB Community Centre: Monday & Wednesday: 9:30-11:30am

The 19th of August 2024 is unusual as it marks the rising of the third of four moons in our astronomical seasonal summer. We call it the Blue Moon, not because it is actually blue, but because it is rare to observe four full moons in one season. The wonder and awe of this phenomenon inspire the library readings for this week. They are rooted in mythological and fantastical storytelling. Two of the recommendations are reviews by young readers. For those of you who prefer to begin with the historical narrative as a foundation, I do recommend Mary Beard’s bestselling Emperor of Rome: Ruling the Ancient Roman World.

The Fourth Wing is the first book in the adult fantasy collection, the Empyrean Series, by American writer Rebecca Yarros. It follows in the footsteps of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones with its theme of absolute dominance achieved through the brutal tactics of all-out war. In the Fourth Wing new recruits enter Basgiath War College where there are only two ways out: graduate or die. The main character, Violet, is forced to train as a dragon rider, an elite force in which the candidates must companion with a dragon to engage the enemy in a battle of total war.

A review by 9-year old Cohen. Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightening Thief is the first in a series of seven fantasy books. “I’d give the book 5 stars because of the intense adventures. The Greek characters are powerful. I liked how Percy, Annabeth, and Grover have a dangerous quest to get back the Master Bolt. Percy, son of Poseidon and a human mother and Annabeth, daughter of Athena and human father are half-bloods; Grover is a satyr – half goat, half human. I’m on the third book and I love them.”

A review by 7-year old Ada Sally. Goddess Girls: Athena The Brain is the first in a boxset of 10 books. “I like Athena The Brain a lot because it’s the first chapter book I ever read by myself. Athena’s father is Zeus, god of the sky, and he’s the principal at Mount Olympus Academy, a special school for girl goddesses. Athena is a goddess and she’s smart so her Dad makes her come to the Academy to get even smarter. She also does not know anything about her family. She hopes she will fit in.”

“Is That White Foam Pollution?

No! It is naturally occurring oils from decomposing plants and animals. The oils float to the surface and reduce the surface tension of the water. With reduced surface tension, wind and wave action introduce air into the mix forming bubbles. This is the same process that occurs in your kitchen sink!

The GBA is seeking nominations for the newly minted Champions of the Bay of the Bay award. This award for environmental stewardship is designed to recognize the efforts of individuals who through their actions preserve our continuing commitment to volunteerism, local initiatives, and above all, the preservation of our beautiful Georgian Bay.

The online nomination form on the GBA website is user-friendly; we encourage PaBIA members to take it upon themselves to be Guardians of Pointe au Baril and become stewards of the Bay. Help recognize those difference makers who enhance, even in the smallest measure, our collective affection for PaB and Georgian Bay. We encourage members to participate in this local and regional initiative. No effort is too small!
