Apparently, the ToA website link I provided wasn’t complete…so here is the corrected link to the Township website so you can check it before burning anything outside! The low and moderate fire ratings allow some burning for cottagers, whereas the high and extreme fire ratings ones do not.
Monday overnight we welcomed over 1 inch of rain – but the temperatures remain moderate. It was quite the lightning show for a while!!!

Notice re GBLT Properties in PaB on PaBIA Map
PaBIA’s Marine Patrol stewards 16 GBLT properties – two of which are Friend Island and West Lookout. Once again it is good to be reminded that for all GBLT properties, NO campfires of ANY kind and NO overnight camping are allowed! In addition, it is important to respect the ecosystems, keep dogs from running free, and “leave nothing but footprints, and take nothing but pictures”. Please notice that this differs from public land (crown land) where campfires and overnight camping are permitted.
On the 2019 maps, however, there are two unfortunate mistakes.
1.The West Lookout property is incorrectly marked as a “Public Picnic Area”.
- Rather, it is conservation land, owned and stewarded by GBLT, not a “public picnic area”.
- The West Lookout property does NOT include Leland Island (A481), a private island south of West Lookout.
2.The “white marker” shown on the 2019 map west of Leland Island does not exist.
With the 2019 map showing MORE West Lookout property than actually belongs to GBLT, please see the map here to identify the GBLT (lime green) versus private property for your future reference.
Please use West Lookout as designated by GBLT and NOT any portion of private islands nearby.
Please adhere to these requests to be sure NOT to disturb any cottagers on adjacent islands!!

GBLT and PaBIA’s Marine Patrol on Little McCoy
by Emma Manners and Roland Binkley, Marine Patrollers 2022
With training complete, we kicked off the summer with a trip to Little McCoy Island with the GBLT. The Georgian Bay Land Trust hosted a Motus event and nature walk to highlight the research being done on migratory birds, specifically during the time following nesting season. The Motus tower is a part of a system that tracks the locations of birds, feeding data to research projects such as Elora Grahame’s study on the annual cycles of Nighthawks and Eastern Whip-poor-wills. With Aaron Rusak as our guide, everyone gained knowledge on the importance of such a project and how species’ reporting can benefit conservation efforts.
iNaturalist, an app you can download to your phone, is a great application to report sightings of rare or endangered species spotted around Pointe au Baril to either the GBLT or GBB project pages. Walking along with the sunshine pouring over the beautiful island, Aaron pointed out species such as Monarch Butterflies, a Catbird over an inland Fen, and the calls of the Yellow-Billed Cuckoo and the Eastern King Bird. The nature walk was a wonderful way of highlighting the diversity of species located within our own community. With regular visits to GBLT properties around Pointe au Baril, the Marine Patrol ensures that areas remain in their natural state to preserve the ecosystems and habitats of Georgian Bay for generations to come.
Literally on the Bay
Book recommendations by Charlotte Stein, owner of Parry Sound Books
Edited by Janet Irving, Education Committee.
There is nothing – absolutely nothing – like reading a book on a summer’s day on Georgian Bay! This summer we suggest some books that are literally set on the Bay – or feel so much so that we just had to include them.
THIS IS THE BOAT THAT BEN BUILT is written by Jen Lynn and beautifully illustrated by Maggie Zeng. We follow a boy exploring in his little boat, meeting a black bear swimming, a wobbly moose, a grinning goose, a proper and prim heron, and other residents of the water. Complete with factual information about the eco-system and each creature.
Aurora Borealis
by Trudy Irvine, Education Committee
Last week’s night skies brought multiple sightings of the Northern Lights over several days in Pointe au Baril. The dancing lights have fascinated and even frightened people for centuries, but as with rainbows in the sun, it is again physics; this time in the dark, that creates these truly awe-inspiring light shows.
The creation of the aurora borealis starts with solar storms on our sun’s surface spewing huge clouds of electrically charged particles. Carried on the “solar wind”, these particles travel millions of miles toward Earth.
Most particles are deflected away before reaching our planet, but some become captured in Earth’s magnetic field, and being charged themselves, accelerate towards the north and south magnetic poles. Here they enter our atmosphere, where they collide with gas molecules, “exciting” the molecules, or essentially, heating them up. The two primary gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are oxygen and nitrogen, and as they are heated, they glow different colours. Oxygen molecules glow a yellowish-green, while purple, blue or pink hues are characteristic of nitrogen. Billions of tiny flashes of these glowing gasses happening in sequence cause the lights to appear to move or dance in the sky. The auroras’ characteristic wavy patterns and “curtains” of light are caused by lines of force in the Earth’s magnetic field.
To increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, try installing an app like “My Aurora Forecast and Alerts” on your phone, or check the Government of Canada’s Space Weather forecast. For more information about aurora, and some truly stunning astronaut-level video, visit here.
