Happy New Year!

The picture above was taken by Alan Buttineau on Sunday, January 1, 2023! Thanks, Alan for sharing! Looks like the warmer temperatures have kept the ice out of the bay…but hopefully, that will change soon!

Now that the New Year is here, we can begin to count down the months before we can return to enjoy the 2023 season! We cannot wait!

Your Board works throughout the year to provide you with a safe and fun-filled summer season…so stay tuned!

PaBIA

PaBIA Fees Increase

The 2022 season was our first return to a full post-Covid slate of PaBIA events, programs, and services. It was wonderful to jump back into full swing, see and feel the closeness of our community once again.

Another post-Covid realization, of course, is that the cost of enjoying our beloved Pointe au Baril seasonal homes has risen markedly.

As Pointe au Baril property owners have witnessed over the last few years, costs across all categories, including labour, materials, services, and fuel have increased significantly. PaBIA has worked hard to control costs and balance our revenues with expenses. However, to protect service levels to our Members, and maintain a balanced budget, we need to ask our members to absorb a fee increase in 2023. Fee increases are to be proportionately shared across all Membership categories. PaBIA will continue to control expenses and add sources of revenue, including fundraising to help offset new navigation markers costs. As has always been the case, PaBIA’s annual advertising revenues generated will continue to fully cover the production and distribution costs of the PaBIA Yearbook.

As you can see below, 2023 increases range from $50 to $10 for Primary through Junior Membership categories.

Thank you for your continuing support of your volunteer Islanders’ Association!

2023 Fees Changes

Primary = $250

Secondary = $206

Supporting = $163

Junior = $50

WANTED: Marine Patrol Applicants for ’23

The Pointe au Baril Islanders’ Association (PaBIA) is seeking students currently enrolled in university or college with a strong interest in the local environment, protecting community quality of life, and promoting better boating safety.  (Please pass this eBlast on if you have friends or family that might have an interest),

The employment period is Sunday, June 18th to Sunday, September 3rd, 2023. Training will be provided from June 18th—June 30th. The Marine Patrollers work as a team of two and have Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week as their days off. Current certificates for Standard First Aid/CPR-C/AED and a boat operator’s license are required.

The Marine Patrol position demands maturity, dedication, and teamwork. Individuals will be required to work autonomously, follow well-defined protocols, and demonstrate sound decision-making in advancing PaBIA’s agenda and those of its partners: Georgian Bay Land Trust, Georgian Bay Biosphere, and Georgian Bay Forever. It is a ‘resume-worthy’ position with attractive compensation for students who are looking for a demanding position with serious responsibilities.

A detailed job description and a full list of qualifications can be found here. For those students interested in a Marine Patrol position, please apply for the 2023 Summer Program by email with a cover letter, resume, and references to bothCath Fairlie, Marine Patrol Supervisor, and Nancy Rogers, PaBIA Secretary-Treasurer.

The DEADLINE for receipt of all resumes is February 17th, 2023. Telephone interviews will be conducted the week of March 6th – March 10th, 2023 and successful candidates will be notified by March 23rd, 2023.

Join The 2023 PaBIA Regatta Dream Team!!!

PaBIA is looking for keen volunteers to join Kelly Watson on the Senior Regatta Committee!

Please sign up, get your friends to join, and be a part of making our midsummer regatta a huge success again this coming season. PaBIA Regattas are the much loved, signature Pointe au Baril annual events that bring our whole community together. But events of this size cannot run without a massive team effort of our volunteers.

If you or anyone you know would be interested in volunteering on the Senior Regatta Committee, please contact Virginia Skuce.

We really need your help and enthusiasm to make this year’s the best regatta ever!!

Fall Off Season Cottage Patrol Completed

Bruce Tiffin completed the Fall Cottage Patrol before the end of November. All problems found were photographed and these were sent to the owners along with Bruce’s reports. The majority of the reports were severe weather-related from fall storms: shingles blown off, one large tree blown down, doors and/or windows blown open.

Bruce was able to close and secure those. Two other reports were animal caused: hungry bear damage to a door and a beaver building a lodge from cedar trees it cut down.

So if you haven’t received a message from Nancy, consider that all is well at your property!

Please Welcome Seymour Hadwen
PaBIA’s New GBA Representative!

As we ring in the new year; I am happy to introduce myself as a new Pointe au Baril representative on the GBA. For many years Georgian Bay has intrigued me by virtue of its beauty and biodiversity. I have been an active cottage owner since 2017 and have certainly benefited, in these COVID-plagued years, from the tranquility of Laura Bay. My interest in the PaBIA is to become actively involved in the PaBIA community and perpetuate the work done to conserve the environment of Georgian Bay.

Travel, boating, Julius Caesar and time spent with family & friends are particular interests of mine. I currently live in Galt where I was a teacher of Philosophy and History for some 32 years. Looking forward I want to: watch my grandson Arlo grow up to enjoy the PaBIA community, enjoy a cold pint on a warm day, and explore time travel in a dream. There has got to be a fissure in the space-time continuum somewhere, why not Georgian Bay? L’existence précède l’essence.

Of Interest

The State of the Great Lakes reports are developed by the governments of Canada and the United States, in collaboration with many partners, in accordance with the 2012 Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. State of the Great Lakes assessments support the identification of current and emerging challenges to Great Lakes water quality and ecosystem health, and help inform and engage others.

Based on the assessments of the nine State of the Great Lakes indicators, the overall status of the Lake Huron basin ecosystem is good and the trend is unchanging.
